This step provides only brief summaries of the different career
paths possible in the Royal Naval Service. Every one considering
joining the Royal Naval Service should absolutely read the full
document on Occupations.
Line Officers: Line officers are the command officers who
run the ranks from Acting Lieutenant to Admiral of the Fleet. All
line officers are trained in all aspects of ship operations -- they
do not have specific departments although they do have specific
"action stations" during battle.
Civilian Officers: Certain professional officers, including
doctors, gunners, chaplains and engineers, are civilian officers.
They do not hold ranks.
Marine Officers: Every ship will have a Captain of Marines
and at least one Lieutenant of Marines to command the Specialist
marines. Squadrons will also have a squadron-wide Colonel of Marines.
Midshipmen: Midshipmen are new officers undergoing an apprenticeship
of sorts aboard ships. After six years, if they pass an examination
for Lieutenant, they are promoted into the ranks of the line officers.
Investigators: Recently, the RNS has begun recruiting scientists
(called "Investigators" or "Principal Investigators")
to serve aboard fleet science ships. The scientists are civilians
though they are subject to military command.
Specialists: The genetically-engineered Specialists perform
menial and dangerous tasks for the RNS and form the entirety of
the fleet's enlisted ranks.
Please note that the position in which players start in the RNS
is dependent upon availability of positions and player experience.
You may wish to consult with a Sivadian staffer to determine where
you will end up before beginning your biography.
