Pick a Race

The first step in creating a Royal Naval Service character is to pick a race. Broadly speaking, the RNS is made up of Sivadians, Aliens and Specialists. This guide does not include detailed descriptions of any of these races -- for those descriptions, we suggest visiting the OtherSpace Survivor's Guide and in particular Races of OtherSpace at a Glance.

Sivadians

Most players in the RNS are Sivadian. New OtherSpace players and even players who are OtherSpace veterans but new to the RNS will likely find playing a Sivadian easier than the other two options. Sivadians form the bulk of the officers of the Royal Naval Service.

Aliens

Anyone who is a Sivadian citizen can serve in the RNS. Since there are many Sivadian citizens who are not actually human, this means that many aliens serve as officers in the RNS. To date there have been Timonae, Centaurans and Humans in the RNS in addition to Sivadians.

In general, any alien species friendly to Sivad may include some Sivadian citizens who may serve in the RNS. However, Lunites, Mystics and Nall are examples of alien species that could almost certainly not end up on an RNS ship for various reasons.

Any concept for an alien RNS officer should include an explanation of how that character, or the character's ancestors, ended up on Sivad as Sivadian citizens in the first place.

Specialists

The enlisted men and women of the Royal Naval Service are Specialists. Specialists perform low-level functions aboard the ship -- they serve as maintenance workers, marines, stewards, boatswains and sometimes even pilots of small craft. Since they are completely lacking in initiative of their own, however, and since their lives consist almost entirely of the specific tasks to which they are assigned, they are difficult to play and sometimes not much fun. We suggest that only experience players who know what they're in for play Specialists.
